Heidi Swedberg will offer a special stand-alone workshop for our younger ukulele players Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Kids who sign up for this workshop are also invited to stay for Heidi’s Fun & Games workshop immediately after. You can register through Brown Paper Tickets by clicking on the link on our Register page.
Cost: $15 per child, includes this workshop and the Fun & Games workshop.
Ages: Five (minimum) to about 12. Kids younger than eight should have an adult who will sit with them to help as needed.
Prerequisites: This workshop is not for kids who have never played the ukulele. They should know Am and E7 so they can jump right into the song and focus on learning the strums, etc. (Kids who don’t play yet may attend the Las Cruces Ukes Kids Club on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 10:30 – 11:15 a.m. at El Calvario United Methodist Church, 300 Campo Street just east of the downtown post office. It’s free and will prepare them for this workshop.)
Course Description: Istanbul (Not Constantinople) is a fun two-chord song which we will play in Am. In this class we will learn the song and some nifty right-hand techniques, like strumming on the back beat and a little rhythmic picking. Stick around and we will perform it for the Fun & Games workshop (stay for the class too)! This class is geared towards kids who have some experience playing and are able to form a few chords and strum. (Hint: get a jump on things and learn Am and E7 before the workshop so you can focus on the good stuff!)
Here’s a video of Heidi and Daniel Ward playing the song she’ll be teaching.
