Last year, some attendees asked if we could arrange a tour so their family members could have a fun day exploring southern New Mexico while the rest of us played the ukulele. So, we did! We’ve partnered with Southwest Expeditions to arrange a full-day tour focusing on one of our most famous part-time residents: Billy the Kid.
The tour will begin with a pick up at either the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum or the Hilton Garden Inn (TBD) Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. From there, you’ll head to nearby Mesilla to see where Billy was jailed and explore this historic town. Next, it’s off to Radium Springs to tour Fort Selden Historic Site, then to Outlaw Rock in the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, where Billy and his gang are reputed to have signed their names in the stone. Now you’re probably going to be hungry, so lucky you! You get to visit one of the most talked about restaurants in the area: Sparky’s in nearby Hatch! They make world-famous green chile cheeseburgers, brisket, pulled pork, and more, and also offer vegetarian items like a veggie burger. Don’t forget their french fries – they’re the best! (The meal is not included in the tour price.) Pose for a photo with one of the many restaurant statues they’ve collected, like Colonel Sanders, Bob’s Big Boy, Ronald McDonald, and more and revel in the amazing collections that fill the building. You might even be able to enjoy some live music while you’re there!
Finally, you’ll head back to the Radium Springs area to taste some New Mexico wines at Fort Selden Winery. You’ll taste five wines and leave with a souvenir glass (kids can try some grape juice!). Then the van will return you either to the Hilton Garden Inn or the museum. What a great day for only $92 per person!
If you’d like to sign up for the tour, click here and sign up directly with the tour company. We do need a minimum of eight people for the tour to be a go, but you credit card won’t be charged until the minimum has been reached. THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER FOR THIS TOUR IS MAY 12.
